By Aaron Humes: By acclamation, youth activist Shawn Saldano was earlier this week elected president of Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action (COLA), succeeding long-serving President Geovannie Brackett.
Citing personal issues, Brackett said he had reached the end of his line. He has spent the last year reorganizing the executive and now hands over to Saldano.
As noted by trustee and executive member Patrick Rogers, COLA was founded 11 years ago this month and has been the preeminent organization fighting for the national interest. He points out that “the resistance” has had to find its ways to speak out but COLA has never been shy of doing so.
Saldano said he counts this as a great opportunity to empower the people of Belize through campaigning, recruitment and planning for the future. His three priorities are internal security, building a neutral revenue stream untainted by corrupt gains, building membership and recruitment, reaching out to young people, and revising its programs and campaigns.
Saldano also announced plans for a first-ever summer camp in July.
