ICJ acknowledges pending Belize/Guatemala case

By BBN Staff: As a formality, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has acknowledged that the territorial dispute between Belize and Guatemala has been brought before the court.

Yesterday, the court issued a release saying that it had been ” seised of a dispute between Guatemala and Belize by way of a special agreement.” The release went on to outline the provisions of the special agreement, which spoke to taking the matter to the court, including the articles which spoke to both countries taking the issue to a referendum in their respective territories.

The court also acknowledged Belize’s official submission of documents on June 7, 2019.

The court’s acknowledgment is another step in the process which now rests with Guatemala submitting its first set of documents by June 7, 2020. Belize will then have a year to respond to that argument. The court also noted that its press releases are for internal purposes and not to be referenced as official documents.
