Jamaica takes field Friday as Women’s World Cup continues

Posted: Thursday, June 13, 2019. 7:22 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The “Reggae Girlz,” Jamaica’s national women’s football team, have already made history even if they do not win a game at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup currently underway in France.

Facing Brazil on Sunday, June 9 (a 3-0 defeat), they became the first Caribbean team to field participants in the men’s and women’s World Cups. The “Reggae Boyz” qualified for the 1998 men’s World Cup, also held in France, but won only one of three matches in the group stage.

On Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. Belize time, they take on Italy, followed by Australia next week. A shock win or draw could see their run extended to the round of 16. The team is led by prolific forward Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, and boosted by the late Bob Marley’s daughter Cedella Booker.

Fellow CONCACAF participants Canada and the United States have had no such difficulties. Both lead their groups and the Americans created history of their own with a 13-nil pummeling of Thailand on Tuesday. It is the most goals scored in a single match, the biggest margin of victory and one more than the entire men’s team has scored in 13 years (12) – a significant talking point as the team continues to press for equal pay to their male counterparts.

The tournament continues until July 7th.
