By BBN Staff: The Maya Mountain Research Farm (MMRF) in San Pedro Columbia in Toledo has won the prestigious Commonwealth Innovation Award.

The Maya Mountain Research Farm applied for the award based on their work over the past 30 years in agro-forestry, food security, land repair, and the last 15 years intensive work on carbon sequestration through agro-forestry and bio-char.

Over 800 projects applied from the 53 nations and 2.4 billion people of the Commonwealth.

Maya Mountain Research Farm’s primary innovations include the use of tropical staple food trees in the agro-forestry system, the application of bio-char from crop residues to premium cultivars of cacao, turmeric, vanilla, and timber with cooperative family labor as the economic driver.

Christopher Nesbitt of MMRF received the award in London in the presence of the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry of Wales.

“We would like to thank Prince Harry, and The Rt. Hon Patricia Scotland, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, and the many people who have worked tirelessly, for making this possible, and for being such wonderful hosts at today’s award ceremony. A special thanks is due Bilikisu Ibrahim, who took excellent care of the six prize winners who made it to London,” a statement from MMRF said.
