Police explain shutdown of late night vending

Posted: Thursday, June 20, 2019. 9:49 am CST.

By Aaron Humes:Those seeking a late night bite to eat will need to head out earlier, as the Police Department is enforcing a plan to close late night vendors by at least midnight on the Southside and 2 a.m. on the Northside in Belize City.

While vendors’ permits may not stipulate close down time and the Police’s new rules appear to stifle their livelihoods, the cops say it is for their own protection.

Edward Broaster, Deputy Commissioner (Operations), explained it rather simply to Channel 5 News:“Well, the thing is, a man without a gun cannot shoot. A man with gun will shoot. If we have less people on the streets, that is less target for crime or people to become victims of crime whether it be robbery or assault or fatal shooting of that or the sort. So, he who controls the street controls the crime.”

Despite the complaints, Broaster says the proliferation of vendors between Wednesdays and Sundays leaves them vulnerable, and that there must be a time limit to help keep order, as Police do not have the manpower to put an officer on every street corner to stop enterprising thieves.

According to Broaster, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has met with some of the vendors to dialogue and there was some progress made about the time curfew.
