By BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams issued a statement yesterday explaining that he has met with the Minister of National Security, John Saldivar regarding the issue of closing of street vendors at midnight.
Williams says that after that meeting, it was determined that the curfew amounts to a deprivation of the vendors right to work.
Therefore, they agreed that the practice must cease and desist forthwith.
“ While the police effort in trying to minimize the amount of people on the streets during late night hours can be understood, this cannot override the right of the street vendors to an honest means of living,” the statement says.
The Police will therefore work with the vendors with a view to make the area within which they work safer for all.
