Minister of Finance alleviates staffing concerns at new Tax Department

By Aaron Humes: Responding to concerns raised during the debate on the Tax Administration and Procedure Bill, 2019, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dean Barrow has assured that current employees will have their choice of whether to stay on or leave.

 Leader of the Opposition John Briceno questioned whether employees of the Income Tax and General Sales Tax Department are being pressured to their choice, and worry that the Government is taking the opportunity to “reward their friends and punish their enemies.”

Specifically, the wife of the former area representative for Albert is the designated head of department, and other senior officials are claimed to be favorites of the ruling party.

But the Prime Minister called that outrageous and far from the truth. Former Commissioner of GST, Betty Ann Jones, has retired; and deputy Evan Brown is retiring shortly at the end of his contract which is upcoming.

As for other employees, those who wish to leave the combined department will have their pick of jobs elsewhere in the Public Service, with no loss of seniority and related perks.
