By BBN Staff: On Friday, June 23, 2019, 28 persons charged with illegal entry to the United States went before a judge in Tucson, Arizona for a deportation hearing and Belizeans were in the group.
The illegal immigrants, who came from Guatemala, Ecuador, Mexico, and Belize were given state-appointed attorneys for the trials and had to have the judge’s instructions translated for them because none of them spoke English. The trials were over in a matter of minutes and they were all sentenced to imprisonment of periods between 30 and 50 days, before facing deportation.
They were processed through an initiative called Operation Streamline, a program coming out of the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security program which was rolled out in Del Rio, Texas in 2005 to expedite deportations, reduce the hearing backlog, and deter would-be migrants from entering the US illegally.
