PUP lashes at Government for senseless violence across Belize

Posted: Monday, June 24, 2019. 4:29 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In light of the recent spike in crime in Belize, PUP Leader, John Briceno issued a statement today expressing concern over the continuing senseless violence across Belize.

“We join with family and friends to mourn the loss of the ten murder victims who lost their lives this past week,” the release stated.

The PUP  said that it holds the Barrow Administration completely responsible for yet another six months in which the general law-abiding citizenry continues to be paralyzed by crime.

The party also stated that they are fed up with the constant claims that statistics show that crime is decreasing in the country.

“The families of Anna Villanueva, the five fishermen, or the family of Principal Alarice Andrewin can testify that crime is not reducing,” the release asserted.

According to the PUP statement, there are already 70 murders this year in addition to missing persons whose remains have yet to be identified.

The PUP noted that the Government continues to ignore the economic, social and environmental factors that induce crime, and indicated, that they along with the social partners are ready to work together with the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Security to formulate a real crime-fighting plan.

“Crime is an issue which should never be made political, it’s a problem that requires all sectors of society to fight it together. Let’s get it right before more blood runs through our streets and homes,” the statement ended.
