By Aaron Humes: Nestor Ramirez Garcia, 19, a Guatemalan on a visitor’s permit, will head home 500 dollars poorer after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis.
Garcia, on May 11, 2019, was caught with 2 grams of cannabis hidden in his right pants foot. Prison officers found the drug during a search while Garcia was waiting to see an imprisoned relative.
But Garcia himself was remanded the following week after pleading not guilty to possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply and traffic.
On his return he changed his plea to guilty for simple possession, incurring a fine of $500. He remains in detention until he can pay, in default four months in jail. Afterward, he will be sent home on a removal order to Guatemala.
Garcia’s visitor permit expired a few days ago but is not expected to face charges as he was in detention and already faces a removal order.
