By BBN Staff: Today, Regional Commander of Community Policing, Cpl. Jason Jones delivered certificates of completion for the Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT) program to 110 students from the Bishop Martin Primary School in San Ignacio, Cayo.
The GREAT graduation saw the participation of 58 students from the elementary curriculum and 52 from the middle curriculum.
Across Central America, the goal of the GREAT program is to improve citizen security, combat gang-related crime and violence, and prevent vulnerable youth from falling victim to gangs or engaging in gang activities.
The program also seeks to assist youth to develop a positive relationship with law enforcement.
Certified police officers are the instructors with a skill-based approach to the training.
The officers are positive role models for the students and help build trust between the police and the community.
The GREAT program is supported by the U.S. Embassy’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs section.
As of June 2018, over 15,500 Belizean children had completed the GREAT program.
