By BBN Staff: There was virtually no change in the price of goods and services when comparing May 2019 to May 2018 according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) produced by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The latest CPI showed a 0.0 percent change in consumer prices, this does not mean that prices have not changed for specific items countrywide, but that those changes kept things within the same price parameters as last year.
The cost of international airfares was lower which resulted in an overall reduction of 1 percent in the Transport sector, while the ‘Housing Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ recorded a 0.7 percent decline during the period. “Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages” were up by 0.5 percent, with 20 of the 27 items on the food basket showing price increases. These items included ground beef, beef steak, pork chops, pigtail, white sugar, rice, eggs, natural milk, onions, potatoes, cabbage, and Belikin Beer without the pint.
The “All other categories of goods and services” index also recorded a 0.6 percent increase.
Dangriga had the most favorable outcome for the month of May, with consumer prices doing down by 5.4 percent when compared to May 2018, the highest reduction in the country, followed by Corozal and then Belmopan with 0.6 and 0.4 percent reductions respectively. Punta Gorda
had the highest increase in consumer prices, 3.2 percent.
