No charges yet in San Pedro double murder

Posted: Saturday, June 29, 2019. 1:22 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The San Pedro community was shook by a double murder on Sunday, June 23 when American cardiologist, Dr. Gary Swank and his tour guide, Mario Graniel were found murdered after leaving the island on a fishing expedition.

Swank had just arrived on the island a day before along with his family for a family vacation.

Belizean authorities were seeking Christian Espat, believed to be the main suspect in the double murder since he had a previous altercation with Graniel.

Espat handed himself in to police but not before creating a video claiming his innocence. When Espat handed himself in to police, he did so in the presence of his attorney. He is still currently detained though no charges have been levied against him.

Authorities had also detained a female for questioning who was acquainted with Swank and Graniel.

Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams says that local police are being assisted by the FBI in this ongoing investigation.
