National Security Minister meets with COMPOL on new security measures

By BBN Staff: Upon his return from Taiwan, Minister of National Security, John Saldivar met with Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams for discussions on the security measures being implemented to address the most recent crime wave.

Today makes one week that an American cardiologist vacationing in Belize was killed along with his tour guide. The murders of Dr. Gary Swank and Mario Graniel shook the San Pedro community.

The National Security council met and decided on new security measures to be implemented including:

  1. A New police recruit intake
  2. San Pedro will receive 16 new Tourism police
  3. Placencia will receive 4 new Tourism police
  4. A golf cart and 2 cycles will be given to San Pedro police
  5. Patrols in San Pedro will be increased by Police and coast guard.

Saldivar will be in San Pedro to review and evaluate along with the newly formed Task Force the effectiveness of the measures being taken.

The Task Force comprises members of the San Pedro Belize Police Force contingent and the local chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association.

The job is to coordinate and monitor law enforcement performance and crime reduction on Ambergris Caye.
