One week later, no charges in San Pedro double murder

By BBN Staff: Exactly one week following the shocking double murder of San Pedro tour guide, Mario Graniel and American doctor, Gary Swank, no charges have been brought against anyone for the murders despite police having detained two suspects last week, including one with a long rap-sheet that police had identified as the main suspect.

Graniel and Swank were on a fishing expedition last Sunday when a skiff approached them and several shots were fired, killing both men in the San Pedro lagoon. Police investigations reveal that Graniel was believed to be the intended target with Swank ending up as “collateral damage” in a feud between Graniel and a “notorious gang figure”. The news has been covered by international news outlets and has generated widespread buzz on social media.

Christian Espat, 23, the man police identified on a wanted poster turned himself in on Thursday after recording a video taking note of his physical condition before handing himself over to police. Espat, a reputed gang figure on the island, was previously arrested, charged, and released on charges in connection with another murder involving an American national. In 2018, Espat along with two others were arrested for the murder of retired American, Cliff Kirk. Four men had broken into Kirk’s property and robbed and attacked him. Kirk was shot and was later transported for medical treatment but died a few days later.

No charges have yet been brought against Espat or anyone else in connection with the murders.
