By BBN Staff: This week, the Belize Fisheries Department acknowledged three men for outstanding performance in the fisheries industry, at the 5th Annual Fisher of the Year Award Ceremony.

The event, geared towards raising awareness about the importance of sustainable fishing practices and honoring those who employ those practices, was held at the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI) office in Belize City on Friday, June 28.

Mario Gonzalez of Mango Creek and Angel Faux of Riversdale were recognized as the Outstanding Fishers of the Year. While Mr. Paulino Elmer Rodriguez, of Sarteneja, was recognized as 2019 Fisher of the Year.

Belize has 2,547 commercial fishers, and over 3,000 sports fishers, that combined number means that the industry has a direct or indirect impact on the lives of over 15,000 people. The fishing industry annually contributes $22 million BZD, or 3%, to Belize’s overall economy, making sustainable practices essential for those involved and the country at large.
