“Actun Chapat Cave not a sanctioned reserve,” says Institute of Archaeology

Posted: Friday, July 5, 2019. 1:10 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Institute of Archaeology (IA) in the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) has issued a notice to tourism stakeholders and the general public that the Actun Chapat Cave is not a designated archaeological reserve.

The IA noted that, currently, it does not have any management presence at the cave and that the cave has “safety, health, and security risks.”

“Tourism stakeholders should not take guests within this cave since studies have indicated oxygen and carbon dioxide levels concerns, which could lead to death,” the IA warned.

The institute added that the cave is susceptible to flooding, which would inevitably kill any guests in the “Big Room” because there are no emergency exits.

“Actun Chapat is not a legal archaeological reserve. Therefore the cave should not be advertised as a tourist destination. Selling this destination can have serious legal implications and can result in lawsuits,” the IA added.

The institute called on all stakeholders to abide by the advisory in the interest of protecting lives.
