By BBN Staff: Police have apprehended Joseph Budna, 38, a Belizean who escaped from a prison sentence in Guatemala, today in Teakettle Village in the Cayo District.
Budna has been on the run since May 27, when he escaped from a hospital. Budna is facing over 30 years in prison in Guatemala for multiple crimes including extortion and kidnapping. He has professed his innocence at every opportunity.
He has also pleaded with Police Commissioner Chester Williams to not hand him back over to Guatemalan authorities.
Budna is no stranger to being in the news having been charged with the aggravated assault of a 14-year-old boy. He also alleged that he was forced by gunmen to help commit a robbery and also claimed he was unlawfully detained by police.
