By BBN Staff: Prime Minister Dean Barrow, at a press conference yesterday, said BTL, which was reported to potentially owe up to $50 million to GST in taxes and fees, does not owe any taxes to the General Sales Tax Department.
“BTL files and pays its GST,” Barrow said. “Now, obviously, some issue has arisen as to whether there is any GST liability pertaining to some intra-company transactions – I don’t know if its intra or inter, some subsidiaries of BTL, that an audit is being conducted and that at the end of that audit, a determination will be made. Clearly, the position of BTL is that, there is no liability for taxes in that regard but we have to wait and see what the GST department will ultimately determine,” he explained.
Barrow was also asked about a letter purportedly sent from BTL Chairman, Nestor Vasquez to Financial Secretary Joe Waight asking for a write off of BTL’s taxes to GST.
In responding, he referenced allegations in a report from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) which he called the press conference to address, “That is absolutely, you know what I can’t say about the FTC I can say about whoever said that. That is an outrageous lie, there is no… How could the people ask for a waiver of taxes that they say they don’t owe. That is an absolute, contemptible lie.”
