BNTU and Ministry of Education at odds over license renewals

Posted: Friday, July 12, 2019. 4:29 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has issued a statement advising teachers not to fill out any license renewal applications issued by the Ministry of Education Youth Sports and Culture.

The BNTU said that the decision came after an emergency meeting with its council of management, with respect to the announcement by the Ministry earlier this month that teachers with “Full Licenses” need to renew those licenses after five years.

“…it was unanimously agreed that we consider the Application for Renewal of Full Licenses set out by the Ministry of Education (MoE) to be contrary to what is set out in the Education Rules which govern Full Licenses to teach,” the BNTU said.

The union said that it would be meeting with Chief Education Officer Dr. Carol Babb, and other key ministry officials to address the matter in the upcoming weeks and would i form teachers of the way forward.

The union contends that the Education Rules speaks to the maintenance of Full Licenses, not renewals, and noted in a previous statement that the ministry has failed to adequately offer the means by which teachers can maintain their licenses.
