By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) has hailed another successful and record-breaking harvest season.

As of 5:55 a.m. yesterday, the factory at Tower Hill received a record 1,317,226 tons of sugar cane, beating out the record set a few years ago. More than 155,000 tons of sugar has been produced to date, with more still being produced.

The most recent estimate of tons cane/tons sugar ratio, a mark of quality, is 8.34 to 1, among the better marks in industry history.

Olivia Carballo Avilez, Cane Farmers Relations Manager for BSI/ASR, in an interview with BBN yesterday afternoon, extended congratulations on behalf of the millers to cane farmers for their hard work in producing quality and quantity, as well as workers at the factory that collaboration, she said, ensures continued success.

In fact, there is still some cane standing over, as occasionally happens every season, due to issues with transport. But the mill is shutting down for renovations and repairs, and the second phase of the direct consumption food-grade sugar project, which BSI/ASR is hoping to market to Europe and especially CARICOM.

The weather worked well due to a drier period for harvesting, which improves sugar content; but it may yet impact production due to expecting lesser amounts of rain in the rainy season.

Prices are expected to rise for the second payment, due at the end of the month, but have yet to be fixed. A third payment is due in November before the start of the next crop season.
