By BBN Staff: Today, leader of the Opposition of the People’s United Party (PUP), John Briceno celebrates his 59th birthday.

The Orange Walk born politician is proud of his Norteno roots and continues to be a great influence in the political arena in Belize.

At 32, the young Norteno assumed office inside the House of Representatives in Belize on June 30, 1993.

Since then, he has been the undefeated Area Representative for the Orange Walk Central Division.  Briceno has also served as a member of the Municipal government in his home town.

From 1998 to 2007, Briceno served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Belize and Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment.

Briceno led the initiative to modernize the Ministry of Natural Resources by implementing a computerized land management program in the country. As a result, thousands of Belizeans were able to acquire land titles and to register their properties.

Briceno also improved and enhanced the department of geology, increasing the staff and hiring experts which were key in the discovery of oil in Belize in commercial quantities.

Briceno served as Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2011.

In 2016, Briceno won a party convention and once again became the Party Leader of the PUP and Leader of the Opposition.

As Belize’s Prime Minister in waiting, Briceno says that with unity and hard work, the PUP will work for a Belize that works for everyone.
