ComPol announces curfew for Belize city

Posted: Thursday, July 18, 2019. 6:40 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, at a press conference this evening, announced a curfew which becomes effective in Belize starting tonight at 6:00 p.m following the recent spike in crime in Belize city following several violent murders in the old capital.

According to Williams, minors have taken part in a number of deadly crimes and something has to be done about it. Williams said the curfew will remain in effect until further notice. He also warned parents that they will be held responsible if their children are found out after the curfew time. The ComPol says any child found out of their home after 6:00 will be taken home and their parents will be picked up and charged.

Williams said parents need to be aware of where their children are and what they are doing. He also said while it is easy to blame police, the public also needs to hold parents accountable for the upbringing of their children. Williams also said he has requested that the age for the curfew be increased from 16 to 18. BBN notes that the curfew is now in effect.
