By BBN Staff: On July 16, 2019, the United States (US) Peace Corps in Belize welcomed 21 new American volunteers.

The Peace Corps is a service opportunity for motivated changemakers to immerse themselves in a community abroad, working side by side with local leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges of this generation.

The Peace Corps mission is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.

To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.

To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

Invited guest speaker at the event was Belize’s Music Ambassador, Shyne Barrow who spoke about the importance of service to others.

“Giving to others is truly a gift to yourself. Life is not about fancy titles, degrees and material possessions. Life is about how you use that fancy title, degree and material possessions to help others,” Barrow stated.

Barrow said that people don’t need to be politicians to be a community leader.

“ You don’t have to be wealthy to make a difference in the life of someone else. You don’t have to wait until the society around you collapses to step in and uplift your people,” Barrow added.

For more than five decades, Peace Corps Volunteers in 141 countries have demonstrated ingenuity, creativity, and grit to solve critical challenges alongside community leaders.
