Department of the Environment to address contamination in New River

Posted: Saturday, July 20, 2019. 1:21 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Residents contacted Breaking Belize News to share their concern about the current contamination of the New River in Orange Walk.

According to reports, due to the pollution of the water, there is a stench.

The residents are calling on the Department of the Environment to address the issue as soon as possible.

Deputy Mayor of Orange Walk, Ian Cal, informed that Program for Belize as well as the Ministry of Health and the Department of the Environment are conducting testing to find the cause of the contamination.

Cal says that once the results of the samples return, it will be shared with the public.

But, residents suspect that the pollution may be linked to factory production and are requesting that they be held responsible once samples return.
