By Aaron Humes: Some eight months after their near-fatal encounter on Iguana Street, Police Constable Marvin McKoy, a member of the Gang Suppression Unit of the Belize Police Department, has been charged with negligent harm against two-year-old Tevin Cacho.
McKoy was arraigned in the Number Eight (Civil and Traffic Division) Magistrate’s Court Friday morning after being served with a notice of intended prosecution shortly after the mishap on December 13, 2018.
McKoy, 30, of Vernon Street, appeared before Magistrate Christine Perrera and pleaded ‘not guilty’. Bail was offered at $2,000 plus one surety , which he met, and is due back in court on September 27, 2019.
At the time, according to reports, the toddler was running across the street to his mother who was at a store in the neighborhood when PC Marvin McKoy of the GSU drove up at the same time.
The vehicle the officer was driving hit the child, and according to eyewitnesses, the toddler was caught under the front of the wheel of the police mobile.
Reports suggested the vehicle was traveling at high speed and the driver seemed to be in shock, moving too slowly to come out and assist the stricken child. Police say that the occupants of the vehicle were responding to suspicious persons loitering in the area.
