The Faye Lin Cannon case two years on

By Aaron Humes: American Anke Doehm, 48, still awaits trial in the Supreme Court on charges of ‘cruelty to a child’ stemming from the death of adopted daughter Faye Lin Cannon, 13, on Ambergris Caye two years ago this month.

Anke and her late husband David were arrested and jointly charged after an examination of the teen’s body certified the cause of the child’s death to be  compression on the chest, which caused internal hemorrhaging, and additionally revealed that she had been sexually and physically abused. But they denied involvement and claimed the death was from natural causes.

The girl’s adoptive mother, Anke Doehm, told police that the teenager was mentally challenged. She said that the girl would hit herself and slam her body against the wall, and that for the past three weeks she had refused to eat, or come out of her room.

The case raised significant ire on the island of Ambergris Caye, from which the couple moved to Belize City during the initial stages of the court case. They were granted bail but in October, 2017, David committed suicide by inhaling nitrogen gas he bought from a local distributor. Part of a note he left behind explaining his actions alleged that he felt persecuted by the Belizean state.

Faye Lin Cannon was the eldest of four sisters who had been in the household of the Doehms. Police handed over her three sisters to the Human Services Department. They have since been returned to the United States to live with their adopted father, David Cannon.
