By BBN Staff: Villagers of Yo Creek in Orange Walk are uneasy as the murder trial of Larry Banner, a mental patient responsible for a horrific mass chopping in June 2016 that claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy, is being called up in the Supreme Court next week.
Banner, who is known to have a history of mental illness, was charged with aggravated burglary, maim and the murder of Danny Choc, who died from a chop wound to the head some days after the incident.
Relatives of the victims told the media that they are afraid the court would release Banner because of his mental state. They said that the
village is concerned that if Banner is allowed to return to the village, he could have another mental episode and possibly kill more
Cases of mental patients causing serious injury or even killing people during mental episodes are not unique in Belize. Already in 2019, a
well respected retired nurse and champion for mental health patients was stabbed by a mental patient, and a man was beaten to death by a mental patient after being placed in a police holding cell with that same patient.
