Costa Maya headliner Becky G apologizes for treatment of Belizean fans

By Aaron Humes: Following complaints of mistreatment of her fans on arriving in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, for this weekend’s International Costa Maya Festival, American singer Becky G, né Rebecca Marie Gomez, made public apology on social media today.

The 22-year old from California said she wanted to address “people talking about my character in any negative way & spreading false information,” stating she was “caught off guard” after landing at the international airport in Belize following two flights and just two hours of sleep. She said she decided on the 90-minute boat ride to Ambergris over a much shorter 15-minute flight due to fear of flying.

Being very tired on her arrival, she continued, “I was caught off guard, yet again. But I did indeed wave to the fans while literally being half asleep.” She further clarified that she did not book an entire hotel for herself, while maintaining that her personal time should be respected an private no matter where she goes.

Becky G concludes, “More importantly, no matter what people say, I’d just like to say that I am without a doubt TRULY thankful and blessed to have the support of the people here in Belize and would never do anything to disrespect anyone. I’m just tired sometimes and since people aren’t used to seeing the human side of us, I guess it can be taken the wrong way. I love my fans and I appreciate them… my team and I had a great time tonight on stage with the wonderful people who came to party with us. So many beautiful people out in the crowd…Again, apologies to whoever felt some type of way about me, but what I will not apologize for is being human or allow myself to be spoken down about without clarifying my end. My real fans know me, more importantly they know that I respect them just as much as they respect me. All love.”

According to Wikipedia, while on tour with Fifth Harmony in October 2017, Gomez suffered an “out-of-control fan attack” while in Mexico City. When exiting the hotel, her security guard tried to hold the fans back. She was pulled by several fans who wanted to take pictures with her. Gomez took to Snapchat to speak about the incident and also revealed that she has been dealing with anxiety, explaining why she ran during the commotion.
