Man accused of attempting to murder mother baffles court

By Aaron Humes: Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer was hard-pressed to get through a routine arraignment for attempted murder after the accused put forth a rambling, seemingly incoherent display in open court.

Twenty-one-year-old Herald Palma (who claims to be older), and who is of no fixed address, is accused of attacking his mother Rosalie on Saturday, July 26, at her home in the “Pink Jungle” – Pickstock Apartments at the corner of Lovely Lane and Pickstock Street.

According to Palma himself, his mother refused to give him money when he asked and said he did not have her permission to go into her house and clean it; but he otherwise denies the charge. Those statements, we understand, are the only coherent ones he made while in court, as he treated the Chief Magistrate to a series of ramblings, giving a variety of names and nicknames when asked to give his full name, and mentioning Prime Minister Dean Barrow among other unconnected things.

He finally got upset and “irritated” with the proceedings and the Chief Magistrate ordered his remand until September 18. The courts can and recently have ordered psychiatric evaluations of prisoners, but in this case the Chief Magistrate delayed one until the return date to see if his behavior today was an isolated incident. Palma’s homelessness may have been a factor in his appearance and manner in court; he was heavily chained and shackled for safety purposes.
