By Aaron Humes: National football champions, the Belmopan Bandits, are hoping the third time is the charm in getting past the first round of the Scotiabank CONCACAF League.
The opponent on Wednesday night at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium is Costa Rican and Central American powerhouse Deportivo Saprissa. At an introductory press conference on Monday in Belize City, team communications manager Ismael “Miley” Garcia made note that “At the turn of the century, Deportivo Saprissa was classified by CONCACAF as the team of the century. It’s an eighty-four-year-old club.”
The Bandits count on two major advantages: Costa Rican head coach Leroy Sherrier Lewis, mastermind of the shock run in the 2013 Copa Centroamericana in Costa Rica including a 2-1 win over Nicaragua and draw with Guatemala en route to a fourth place finish; and homefield in the first game.
The team unveiled its new jerseys for the season, to be first used on Wednesday night. The home jersey is all red with white and gray trim, while the road jersey is traditional red and white with black shorts. The alternate jersey is in yellow and green, the official city colors of Belmopan.
Game time is 8 pm Wednesday night, with the return match in Costa Rica a week hence. The winner meets El Salvador’s Aguila in round two.
