Belize celebrates Emancipation Day

Posted: Thursday, August 1, 2019. 9:58 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On August 1, 1834, slavery was abolished in Belize and in the Caribbean.

As a result of this, each year August 1st is celebrated as Emancipation Day.

Today in commemoration of this day the UBAD Educational Foundation (UEF) had a symbolic boat launch on the seafront near the Marine Parade Boulevard.

This boat launch is in remembrance of the Trans Atlantic slave trade.

Goods were transported from Europe to Africa in exchange for slaves. Those slaves were then shipped to the Americas and Caribbean to work in plantation fields.

In addition to the boat launch, the UEF is also hosting a conference tonight with Jamaican poet and social commentator, Mutabaruka.

That event takes place at 7:00 p.m. tonight at the Gateway Youth Center.
