Government of Belize holds stakeholder meeting for Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipalities Initiative

Posted: Thursday, August 1, 2019. 1:19 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Labour, Local Government & Rural Development (MLLGRD) is hosting a two-day meeting in the Cayo district for organizations that are a part of the Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipalities Initiative (SCFMI).

The MLLGRD is chairing the meeting, which gathers 29 participants including municipal administrators, and coordinators of the initiative along with representatives from the National Committees for Families and Children (NCFC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Development Project (UNDP).

The meeting being held today and tomorrow is geared towards providing a common space for progress report on the strategic plans; discussing achievements and proposed solutions to challenges faced by each municipality; and share the results of the baseline assessment and the timeline for certification.

The meeting will also be used to discuss the Rolling Work Plans for 2019 to 2021, signed by MLLGRD, NCFC and UNICEF.

In 2014, the Mayors of the nine municipalities in Belize signed an agreement for achieving Sustainable and Child Friendly Municipalities.

In 2018, the Hopkins Declaration, established a re-commitment for the progressive realization of children’s rights across all nine municipalities, i.e. successful implementation of the SCFMI and the National Children’s Agenda while advancing concrete actions to ensure effective implementation.
