By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Natural Resources issued a statement today regarding the land issue that is affecting over 25 farmers in La Gracia village, Cayo.

The Ministry says that the authority to issue permission to survey is the sole responsibility of the Ministry.

“In July of this year, the Ministry gave a Superintendent of Police and other Belizeans the permission to survey national land in the Drill Camp Area, Young Gal/McRae Registration Section, Block 19, Cayo District (La Gracia area) with the goal of resolving a long-standing land matter,” the statement expressed.

The Ministry informs that the surveys were being carried out by private surveyors on those person’s behalf.

Furthermore, the Ministry reminds the public that in order to obtain legal ownership of national land it is necessary to submit an application and receive a lease or title which is recorded at the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Local sources have confirmed to BBN that the Superintendent of Police who obtained the permission is from Western Belize.

Farmers in the village claim that they have been working on the land for over 25 years and have invested significantly in developments.
