Tourist apologizes: ‘My actions were foolish’

Posted: Sunday, August 4, 2019. 7:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Two photos of a tourist at an archeological site in Belize went viral on social media today.

In one of the photos, the tourist is drinking a Belikin beer at the site, which is prohibited. In the second picture, the tourist appears to be urinating at the site.

The photos caused outrage from Belizeans and prompted a statement from the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH).

NICH reminded all visitors that drinking at archeological reserves is prohibited and emphasized that they are sacred sites which must be respected.

The tourist issued an apology via his Facebook page minutes ago saying that he is sorry and did not mean it as a disrespect.

“I absolutely beg your forgiveness. I meant no disrespect. This was not supposed to be a bad or mocking thing. I apologize with my entire heart. I am so sorry. I come to Belize every year. We love the Mayan culture we love the history we love everything about it. I am sorry I meant no disrespect and my actions were foolish,” he stated.
