By BBN Staff: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) along with the Refugees Department of Belize held a training for border management officials and law enforcement officers on Standard Operating Procedures for identification and referral of people seeking asylum in Belize.
The training was held today in San Ignacio Town.
The material imparted will assist officials to better identify asylum seekers when they come in contact with them and refer them to the adequate authorities.
Material covered ranged from the global and regional refugee situation, including International Refugee Law and the Refugee Law of Belize.
Participants actively engaged in case studies identifying situations of persons seeking asylum and proposed solutions.
These updated procedures have been jointly developed through a year-long working group process by the Government of Belize and UNHCR in the context of an ongoing regional cooperation framework on international refugee protection and solutions (CRPSF/MIRPS).
The training was held at the San Ignacio Hotel from 8:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m.
The training was attended by 30 public officers from various departments in Cayo District.
