By BBN Staff: Today, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber, released a video where he publicly thanked the Republic of China (Taiwan) for its support throughout the 30 years of friendly diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Faber stressed that Taiwan’s greatest contributions to Belize have been in the education sector, which also falls under his ministerial portfolio.

“There can be no greater gift from a country to another country than, of course, the support in education. Because it is a gift that once it is given, can never be taken back, and of course that gift continues to give,” Faber said.

Faber also said that Belize and Taiwan hold many similarities, comparing the territorial dispute with Guatemala with the claim that the People’s Republic of China has on Taiwan.

Belize is one of only 17 diplomatic allies Taiwan has remaining, as more countries continue to sever diplomatic ties in favor of mainland China. Belize has advocated for Taiwan at many gatherings of the United Nations (UN), calling for the UN to include Taiwan in activities that it has otherwise been excluded from.

Taiwan has supported Belize over the years with various grants and loans for education, infrastructure and other projects of the national interest.
