Guatemala to elect a new President on Sunday

Posted: Friday, August 9, 2019. 9:03 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Four years ago, Guatemalans elected former comedian, Jimmy Morales as President of the Republic.

On Sunday, August 11, 2019, Guatemalans will return to the polls to elect their new President.

The first round of elections was held on June 16, 2019. However, neither of the candidates secured more than 50 % of the vote.

Presidential candidates Sandra Torres of the National Unity of Hope Party (UNE) and Alejandro Giammattei of conservative Let’s Go (VAMOS) will face off to become the next President of Guatemala.

Notably, both candidates are well-established politicians.

Incumbent President, Jimmy Morales is constitutionally barred from running for a second 4-year term.

Whoever is elected new president will assume office in January 2020 and will have to deal with the status of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala
(CICIG).

In addition, the new President will be faced with the recent asylum agreement signed between Guatemala and the United States of America.

The agreement commits Guatemala to extend asylum to migrants who seek it when they’re moving through the country.

Migrants who continue to migrate to the US will be returned to Guatemala.
