PUP picks fight with GOB over burned hardwood in the south

Posted: Friday, August 9, 2019. 2:38 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the Peoples United Party (PUP) condemned the Government of Belize (GOB) for what it describes as “criminal negligence” in the Sarstoon Temash National Park (STNP) after the Sarstoon Temash Institute of Indigenous Management (SATIIM) had to burn a cache of confiscated hardwood.

The PUP noted that SATIIM had to burn the wood, which was illegally harvested by presumed Guatemalan poachers because the NGO did not have the resources to have the wood transported from the area. The party said that if the wood had been left behind it would have been retrieved by the poachers and sold in Guatemala.

“While the PUP understands the decision made by SATIIM to destroy the wood, we note that the hardwood, if retrieved, could have been used to construct much-needed bridges and schools in the communities around the park,” the PUP said.

The party also condemned the various multimillion-dollar infrastructure projects that GOB has done while neglecting to provide SATIIM with the necessary resources as part of the co-management agreement for the STNP.
