Wins for Western sides and Wagiya in week 3 of Premier League

Posted: Monday, August 12, 2019. 8:16 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Defending champions Belmopan Bandits and western rivals Verdes FC both recorded home wins to stay atop the Premier League of Belize in week 3.

On Saturday night, a brace (2 goals) from Roberto Silva and score from Georgie Welcome gave Bandits to a 3-1 win over Independence Altitude FC, whose scorer was Andres Orosco.

Altitude captain Luis “Baca” Torres received a red card when, already on one yellow card and being substituted, he dallied to welcome Ronaldo Vergara to his first game of the season and hand over the captain’s armband to José Urbina, earning the referee’s ire for timewasting.

On Sunday afternoon, the Green Machine steamrolled Freedom Fighters/Valley Pride, 3-0, inside the Norman Broaster Stadium in downtown San Ignacio. Scorers were Krisean Lopez, Mariano Landero and Edwin Bernal. Jordy Polanco, Verdes midfielder, made his return as a substitute in the last half hour. The southerners missed a penalty kick through Elston Augustine.

Elsewhere, San Pedro Pirates continue to struggle with a scoreless stalemate versus Placencia Assassins on Saturday, while Dangriga’s Wagiya were led by Carlton “Fubu” Thomas and Elroy “Bibb” Kuylen in a 2-0 shutout this afternoon of Belize Defence Force.

After three weeks, the standings read: Verdes and Bandits tied on nine points, the Bandits leading by goal difference; Wagiya in third on six points; Placencia on four; B.D.F. on three; San Pedro on two; Altitude on one; and Valley Pride both pointless and winless after three matches.

Next week’s games: Altitude vs Wagiya, Saturday August 17 in Independence at 7:30; Placencia vs Valley Pride in a 3:30 kickoff; BDF host Bandits at the MCC at 4 and Verdes host San Pedro at the same time at the Norman Broaster.
