Mexican Cultural Institute to host Visual Art Exhibit

By BBN Staff: The Embassy of Mexico in Belize invites the public to the exhibit: CÓRDOBA/MATHAR Contemporary Practices in Embroidery and Painting, curated by Elizabeth Calzado.

The cultural event will be held on Friday, August 16, 2019, at 7 pm at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Belize City.

The exhibition will showcase the contemporary embroidery works of Pilar Córdoba and the recent paintings of Manel Mathar, curated by the visual art expert Elizabeth Calzado.

Calzado is an artist, curator, and editor. She specializes in preventive conservation of contemporary art, which she has offered through her independent platform Paricutín. Recent exhibitions include Clasificación detonante 4051.

Investigación 61 + investigación 111, hosted by Impronta Casa Editora in Guadalajara to which she contributed original sculptures, and no alcohol, no mota-no droga, an exhibition of works by artists Edgar Cobián y Cristián Franco which she curated at La Murciélaga in Mexico City.

Pilar Córdoba’s work covers different medium like cross-stitched embroidery, collage, drawing, engraving, and photography. A crafting process is the central concept in her work, reflecting upon current automatism and recalling to traditional handmade techniques.

Human anatomy, nature and its textures, relationships, optical illusions, and patterns are recurring subjects in her practice, which she explores in a tactile rather than analytical way.

Manuel Mathar was born in 1973, in the city of Mérida, Yucatán.

Mathar is a self-taught artist., some of his solo exhibitions have been “With talk and gasoline odor”, at the Arte Actual Mexicano Gallery in Monterrey in 2012 and that same year, “Costra”, at MUCA Roma (Universitary Museum of Arts and Cience); “Step confined by land not firm”, of 2011, in the Museum of the City of Querétaro; “Years of revenge”, in Proyectos Monclova Gallery in 2007, and “Supremo”, in the Alternativa Once Gallery in Monterrey, Nuevo León, in 2005.

Mathar’s work belongs to different art collections, such as the Tax Administration System, Carrillo Gil Art Museum, Pedro Coronel Museum, Arcos Dorados Collection, Regional Museum of the City of  Querétaro, Rufino Tamayo Museum, Museum of Arts and Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Pinacoteca de Nuevo León and Museum of Modern Art of Saint Etienne, France.
