Cordel Hyde celebrates 46th birthday

Posted: Tuesday, August 20, 2019. 10:33 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Cordel Hyde, the PUP’s National Deputy and one of few sure-bet candidates with as much fanfare and popularity as any dominant figure in the history Belizean politics the past couple decades, is today celebrating his 46th birthday.

Hyde, the son of renowned Kremandala Chairman, Evan X Hyde and popular caterer, Claudette Coleman Courtney, entered politics in May 1994. At that time he was only 20 years old and had just returned from his studies abroad where he received a Bachelor’s degree in English communications.

Fresh out of university he vied for the chairmanship of the PUP’s Lake Independence constituency and easily defeated incumbent Carlos Diaz. Hyde later became the PUP’s standard bearer in Lake Independence and by 1998 he won his first election and was appointed as Minister of Education. He was only 25 years old when he achieved this feat.

During the administration of Prime Minister Said Musa, Hyde served in several ministries such as Housing, Youth, Sports, Transport and Defense. By all accounts, Hyde has always remained connected and loyal to the people of Belize and especially those of his constituency .

In 2004 he was was one of 7 Ministers who advised the Prime Minister Musa that the country was headed in the wrong direction. Later that year Hyde resigned from Cabinet in solidarity with several of his colleagues who were sacked. About 10 months later he returned to Cabinet but was this time fired because he refused to support a controversial legislation that he felt was not in the interest of the people of Belize.

When Musa’s administration collapsed at the height of controversy and waning public support during the 2008 election, Hyde was one of only six from the party to be re-elected.

In 2012 he could not seek re-election because of his son’s failing health. His son would eventually and unfortunately lose that battle.

By the 2015 election Hyde returned and stunned his opponent by 1,999 votes. In 2016 he sought leadership of the PUP but was eventually appointed as National Deputy. As National Deputy he organized the 2018 PUP Belize City Council team, which emerged victorious over a UDP council that had been in office for 12 consecutive years. Despite that victory Hyde’s journey continues.
