Court holds Belize Rural resident over imported marijuana

By Aaron Humes: Joel Sutherland, 42, a resident of Scotland Halfmoon, Belize District is remanded for possession with intent to traffick 12,465 grams or 39 pounds of Mexican high-grade marijuana.

Sutherland who was represented in court by Attorney, Kathleen Lewis appeared before Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford and pleaded not guilty to the charge but the law states that for possession of any amount of marijuana over 5 kilograms the court cannot grant bail.  Sutherland was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until October 1, 2019. His attorney will be making an application to the Supreme Court for bail for him as early as this Friday, August 23.

The bust was made on Friday, August 16, 2019, in the village of Scotland Halfmoon.
