By Aaron Humes: Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber is looking ahead to the party’s national convention in Belize City next February, where he faces Belmopan area rep John Saldivar and possibly others for the right to become the leader of the United Democratic Party and potentially Prime Minister of Belize.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow, as he wryly reminded House of Representatives members on Friday of last week is on his way out after one of the most successful tenures a political leader in Belize has had since George Price – three terms as Prime Minister and two decades as UDP leader.
In light of the deputy’s issues, can the P.M. and the party entrust him with the reins of power after February 9th, so that the P.M. can start retirement early, perhaps even before the March budget?
Faber told reporters leaving the House on Friday that any decision the Prime Minister makes “[is] a decision that he will make on the counsel of the NPC [National Party Council] and of cabinet of course.” But he concedes that “”The possibility is there. It’s very evident, I am ready to take on that mantle should I become the leader of the party, yes.”
In early September Faber will be endorsed for another term in Collet during ceremonies at the Belize City Center.
