By BBN Staff: The Macal River in western Belize was once known to attract many visitors to its pristine waters joining the Twin Towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
But, lately, the river has been dying.
Residents of the Twin Towns are calling on the Department of the Environment and the relevant authorities to take action to assist in saving the river.
Residents are gravely concerned about the effects it can have on the wildlife.
A video has gone viral on social media showing a truck reportedly belonging to the local town council dumping garbage in close proximity to the river.
Residents are seeking the assistance of Mayor Earl Trapp to cease and desist from such practice and to engage in a public awareness and education campaign to save the Macal River.
