Cayo Animal Welfare Society to host fundraiser event this month

Posted: Thursday, August 22, 2019. 11:13 am CST.

By BBN Staff: If you are an animal lover, a fan of sweet treats or both, the Cayo Animal Welfare Society (CAWS) is hosting an event for you.

On Saturday, August 31, the CAWS is hosting a bake sale fundraiser in San Ignacio in the market area near the welcome center.

The event, which will run from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature baked goods for sale, face painting for children and various items being raffled throughout the day.

The organization, which is run entirely by volunteers, is calling on the public especially fellow animal lovers to support the initiative, which is geared towards helping the stray animal population in cayo.

Shauna Morelli, president, and treasurer of CAWS told Breaking Belize News (BBN) that the organization was started in 2014 by concerned citizens who noticed that there was a lack of resources available for the large population of stray animals in Cayo.

“The main mission is to promote education and improve the lives of domestic animals in Cayo, particularly the street animals,” Morelli said.

She noted that the organization does not receive any grants and runs entirely on the funds they raise along with donations that come in along the way. Anyone interested in donating baked goods or items for the raffle or would be interested in helping out at the sale can contact CAWS through their Facebook page.
