By Aaron Humes: Thirty-two-year-old Jose Manuel Portillo is behind bars after being read separate charges of arson, using threatening words, and common assault against the owner of a property destroyed by fire on Sunday.
Portillo was arraigned on the latter two charges yesterday, Wednesday and was offered bail; but today he was remanded on the indictable charge of arson until October 30, meaning he will need to seek bail before then at the Supreme Court.
Portillo is accused of unlawfully damaging by fire a 20 feet x30 feet wooden structure house valued at $27,000 along with household items all to a value of $34,290 – the property of Kimberly Betancourt. He is also accused of previously threatening to burn down Betancourt’s house.
