By BBN Staff: Following an incident this week where hundreds of fish floated up dead in the New River, the organization Friends of the New River (FNR) Belize is calling on concerned Belizeans to sign a petition calling for the Government of Belize to take necessary actions to address the contamination of the water.
The organization is hoping to accumulate 2,000 signatures from concerned persons int the Orange Walk and Corozal districts, and present it to the Department of the Environment in September, to take
urgent action to prevent and control pollution of the New River according to its legal mandate laid out in Section 4 of the Environmental Protection Act.
FNR said that it will be passing around the petition at the public meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Gala Lounge, located on the Belize/Corozal Road, Orange Walk Town.
“You may also sign the petition at the BTIA Orange Walk Chapter booth tomorrow (Saturday, August 24th) at the OW Tourism Expo,” FNR said.
The pile of dead fish has caused an offensive odor affecting the quality of life for residents along the river bank. Contamination in
the river has been the topic of discussion for several weeks, as more concerns are being raised about industrial waste being dumped into the river.
