Group Hug’s backpack drive assists 265 students

By BBN Staff: For the 5th consecutive year, Group Hug has fundraised and organized volunteers to procure, assemble, and distribute school bags and school supplies to children who are in need of them.

This year, the Group partnered with all the Primary Schools in Hattieville, and then for Belize City, the Muslim Community School and St. Martin’s de Porres Primary School.

Children from other schools who were identified were also beneficiaries.

“We were grateful to enjoy an abundance of support from the business community and individuals like Tyana Haylock and Tyra Cutkelvin who were our summertime Santas,” a statement from the organization said.

Group Hug was founded in July 2015 by young Belizean, Andre Pitts after his attempt to assist twenty-five (25) children in poor communities with school supplies.

That effort resulted in a community-based charitable organization being envisioned and formed and resulted in one hundred and seventeen (117) children receiving school bags with supplies, just 6 weeks later.
