This article was written by Richard Harrison, Belizean investor in production and services businesses in Belize. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration degree from Lancaster University.

Vamos para un Guatemala differente! Lets go for a different Guatemala!

Vamos a dar rumbo a Guatemala! Lets give Guatemala direction!

These were the principal campaign slogans of the recently elected Guatemalan president, Dr. Alejandro Giammattei.

The success of the Giammattei presidency hinges on his ability to deliver on the promise of these slogans…and even though he was cast as the candidate of the status quo establishment and military…he has to break out of that mold that has Guatemala under lock and key…and do things differently…if he expects to get different results that fulfills the needs, wants and desires of the deserving people of Cuauhtēmallān (place of many trees).

The new president of 60% majority vote wasted no time in appointing the youngest Foreign Affairs Minister Guatemala has ever had, at the age of 38…Pedro Brolo…economist, entrepreneur and diplomat. Giammattei’s choice of Brolo is a sign of hope and desire for shift away from the same old, same old.

The Giammattei election campaign did not make an issue of the Belize question…no “Jimmy-the-clown”-style sabre rattling…no including of Belize in the Guatemalan map as provocation…no inflammatory propaganda inciting the Guatemalan people to raise expansionary, neo-colonialist, ill-ambitious, destructive designs over Belize.

His campaign, it can be said, captured the spirit of the Guatemalan people…who only want peaceful, respectful and constructive relations with Belize…and for their governments to improve their bonafide economy for better standard of living…for improved education and health services…for better infrastructure and utility services…to help the people take better care of the environment…to better guarantee public safety…and to rapidly reverse the trends towards increasing poverty and mal-nutrition.

The economist, entrepreneur and human rights preparation of Pedro Brolo should allow him to calculate that any dismemberment of Belize could never serve the best interest of the 1847 Republic…which gained the recognition of Spain for its independence and sovereignty until 1863….through a Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Navigation that saved face for both sides, and opened the door for post-colonial, constructive relations between the Ibero-American states.

Indeed, he should be able to see that allowing the freedom-loving people of Belize to reach their full potential…will serve the best interest of the people of Guatemala.

He should work with Belize and the Friends of Belize and Guatemala to hammer out a Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, Navigation and Recognition long before the ICJ ruling…which only promises to resolve territorial, maritime and insular domain…and not much else….all these other issues will need to be resolved anyway…in order that a voluntary perpetual peace is achieved between the governments and people of Belize and Guatemala…for the greater good of all the people of MesoAmerica and the world.

The New Belize will become the Little Singapore of MesoAmerica…and the World Showroom for Sustainable Development.

We will engage in Economic, Justice and Political Governance Reforms with the help of Caricom, UK, Commonwealth, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, USA, Israel and Mexico.

Belize will be the financial and trading paradise of MesoAmerica….it will set the pace for real income growth for all the people of our region…it will be the best example of fairness, justice, peace and safety….and it will do so while writing the manual for sustainable development in the region…focusing on growing our non-oil sectors of eco-tourism, light industry, services and trading.

The risks associated with offshore oil exploration we do not need nor want…indeed we must move with a sense of urgency to harness the know-how and resources to rehabilitate all polluted areas…and put in the legal, administrative and oversight systems that would prevent such destructive behavior towards the very earth that sustains us.

The time for change is now…and we look forward to the earliest visit of President Giammattei and Foreign Minister Brolo to the Jewel.
